The Finals is a unique competitive shooter, full of fast-paced action. It can take a bit of time to get used to everything on offer, with the myriad of movement options, the array of weapons, and the overall chaos that can ensue when you fight an enemy team.

The goal is for your squad of three to get your hands on the cash vaults, deliver them to the dropoff points, and defend it long enough to cash in your points. Alternatively, you could always let another team do the hard work for you and steal the drop at the last minute.

There are all sorts of tactics and character builds on offer, so we’ll give you some tips to keep you going.

Experiment with builds

Before you start picking your weapons and items, you can select different sizes for your characters with heavy, medium, and light options. These make a significant difference to how you play. Not only do different builds get access to different weapons, but heavier characters have more health, while lighter characters have more mobility.

Take some time to try out the different character builds to find what works best for you, don’t stubbornly lock in on something that isn’t giving you results.

Bring a variety of secondary items

Aside from your main gun, you’ll be able to bring a wide array of other items with you, and you should make sure you fill it with some variety. These items will recharge over time rather than be consumed, so there’s no point bringing a bunch of explosives when they all do basically the same thing.

There are great utility items like the zipline gun, the defibrilator, and the goo grenades. These can get you to advantageous positions in a flash or block out the enemy’s attacks, so you shouldn’t turn your nose up at them.

Keep your head on a swivel

The maps in this game aren’t big, and with four teams fighting over two vaults you’re bound to end up fighting more than one team at once. When you lock into a battle with one team, don’t set up for a slow siege, because you won’t have long before another team is coming up behind you and squeezing you out. This is a fast game, and you need to charge in with full force whenever possible.

Pick your moments

You’ll be able to see the locations of vaults and cashouts at all times on the map, and you’ll be able to see if another team is already interacting with them. If a team beats you to a vault just before you reach it, don’t charge right in as they’ll probably be set up and guarding all the entry points.

Take a moment to either ambush them as they leave, or blow through the wall/ceiling/floor to catch them by surprise. An extra few seconds of preparation can make for a very clean assault.

Create chaos

Ultimately, you’re going to end up in a bunch of intense fights in The Finals, so embrace it. Action is going to come at you thick and fast – there’s no room for Counter-Strike-style caution. Throw grenades, blow up the environment, and cover the field in gas and goo. The more chaos you can create, the more your enemy will be thrown off their game and the easier they are to take them out – that’s what The Finals is all about.
