It’s all about the Chaos Dwarfs these days in Total War: Warhammer 3, their highly-anticipated debut drawing ever closer. Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs releases on April 13, 2023, and adds a trio of playable factions with their own campaign goals and mechanics into the game. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be excited about a faction that’s able to field a literal pain train from its unit roster?

While a lot of questions about the Chaos Dwarfs have been answered already, we now have the confirmed starting positions for the three legendary lords of the Chaos Dwarfs in both the Realms of Chaos and Immortal Empires campaigns.

Total War: Warhammer 3 – Astragoth starting positions

Astragoth Ironhand starts northwest of Zharr-Naggrund, close to several Orc and Dwarf factions as well as Kislev, which will all provide him with valuable free labor forces after some bullying. He will have access to some Chaos factions, which could prove valuable allies and trading partners.

Total War: Warhammer 3 – Drazhoath starting positions

Drazhoath the Ashen has to deal with a very diverse set of enemies right from the start, being confronted with High Elves, Skaven, Ogres, Vampires, and Nurgle’s favored daemons. Still, the way northwards to Zharr-Naggrund is relatively open, tempting Drazhoath to make a glorious return from exile. This is especially true with the River Ruin now being accessible by ship.

Total War: Warhammer 3 – Zhatan starting positions

Zhatan the Black begins the game in the northeast of Zharr-Naggrund with the potential to raid Orcs and Ogres around him and ally with the Chaos forces in the area, which is going to be good for trading. It may even be tempting to start raiding expeditions into Grand Cathay, if more labor forces are needed.

Each of the three Chaos Dwarf lords will have some unique campaign flavor thanks to their starting positions, as they are likely to face different enemies.

On the other hand you now face some very powerful new opponents when playing as Grimgor Ironhide, who has very good reason for wanting to trample the Chaos Dwarfs into the ground, being an escaped slave of those cruel masters. Any Chaos faction, though, will gain valuable allies in the Chaos Dwarfs and may even profit from their Convoys arriving and trading at their cities.

Order-aligned factions certainly are going to have a tougher time in the future, as Katarin, Imrik, and Miao Ying must deal with new rowdy neighbors in their general vicinity.

At least Kislev and the Empire will be able to call upon the aid of Ulrika Magdova, the game’s first Order-aligned Vampire, as a legendary hero to bolster their defenses. Ulrika arrives as free DLC with update 3.0 alongside Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs. Until then, check out the best Total War: Warhammer 3 mods to keep your game spiced up.
