The Hylian Shield is the strongest shield in all of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Fans of the series will also recognize it as an iconic piece of Link’s gear that he obtains in almost every game. With a whopping 90 defense and great durability, it’s a must-have item, plus, you can get it relatively early without too much fuss.

We’ll tell you how to get the Hylian Shield using a method that you can use from the moment you touch down in Hyrule for the first time.

Hylian Shield location – Zelda TOTK

As you may have expected, the Hylian Shield is stashed away in Hyrule Castle, but thankfully, it’s one of the sections that got left behind during the Upheaval. Go around and either swim, sail, or glide into the dock on the northwest side of the castle.

There is a main dock area that seems perfect to embark on, but avoid it. If you go there you’ll have to fight/run from a Gloom Hands and Phantom Ganon miniboss. Instead, glide and swim over to the big rock on the opposite side. From there, you can climb the wall with the banner on it – bring some stamina-replenishing items just to be safe.

Once you’re up there, you’ll see five lit braziers surrounding one big unlit brazier. Light an arrow and fire it at the big brazier.

Doing so will make a chest appear, open it to find the Hylian Shield.

How to rebuy the Hylian Shield – Zelda TOTK

While the Hylian Shield’s durability is very good, it’s not infinite, and it may break if you rely on it too much. Fear not though, as you can replace it – for a price. You need to go to Hatteno Village on the east of the map and complete the Mayoral Elections questline.

It takes a while, but it’s worth it as you’ll unlock Cece’s relic shop, which lets you recover many valuable armor sets and weapons that you might’ve lost on your journey, the Hylian Shield being one of them. It costs 3,000 rupees though, so check out our rupee farming guide to build up your stash.
