A Plague Tale: Innocence is now free to claim on the Epic Games Store for 24 hours, ending on January 4, 2024. This is probably the best free game given away during the current EGS holiday promotion yet, though the offerings have been relatively mid so far – not that one should complain too much about free stuff.

Developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Entertainment, this third-person adventure game with prominent stealth elements was originally released in May 2019 and received glowing reviews. It sits on a critical score of 81 and a public score of 84 on Metacritic today.

It's not a game you should play if you don't like seeing rats. There'll be... a lot of them :: Asobo Studio / Focus Entertainment

Here’s the official description of the title’s narrative:

“Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds, they will fight to find purpose in this brutal, unforgiving world.”

A Plague Tale: Innocence received several award nominations in 2019 and 2020, among them for the Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2019, though it did not bring that one home. It has spawned a successful sequel called A Plague Tale: Requiem as well, which put even more focus on the popular stealth aspects from Innocence, so there’s even more content available in case you like the original game.

You can head to the Epic Games Store to claim the game for free via the link.
