To be expected after the lack of preload

It’s finally here: Baldur’s Gate 3 has officially graduated from Early Access and is now fully available on PC. However, some people may have trouble downloading and installing the RPG from Larian Studios due to Steam being a bit strained at the moment – it turns out that several thousand people wanting to download 122GB from your servers at the same time will do that.

Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t have a preload due to already being available in Early Access. Currently, Steam does not offer the option for developers to offer a preload in that case, which means that everyone jumping on the hype train today is trying to download the full game instead of things being a bit more spread out. If your boss has approved your special leave for Baldur’s Day, then a bit of a delay is probably alright, but it’s unfortunate for anyone with more time restrictions.

It’s perhaps a sign that Steam should look at something like this in the future, though it also has to be said that the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3, which was advanced forward by a month from the original release date, is a bit of a weird one in general. One thing is for sure: A game breaking Steam is always a great indicator for success, so here's to a happy Baldur's Day, everyone!

With a game length of more than 200 hours for a thorough playthrough, one day isn’t going to be enough even for gamers with high stamina. In case you’re among those with Steam problems at the moment, there’s little you can do outside of waiting, so drop by our Baldur’s Gate 3 class tier list to start theorycrafting your character or check out the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast to explore whose voices you can expect to hear.
