Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox save issue is Microsoft’s to resolve, Larian states
Eager adventurers playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series X|S are continuing to have problems with saving their game, which in the worst case can lead to progress being lost – a frustrating issue, especially in a title about throwing dice and making consequential decisions. Developer Larian Studios stated that it was “aware that there is a save issue on Xbox that continues to linger” and explained that a firmware issue on Xbox consoles was the underlying cause for this.
That means that PC and PS5 players have nothing to worry about, but also that Larian itself can’t do much to solve the problem.
“Microsoft is aware of the issue and is working on it but obviously during the holidays everyone is working at lower capacity so it may take a while before a proper fix becomes available,” the post on social media continued. “We completely understand that losing progress is frustrating, and unacceptable. We’re doing everything we can to ensure this problem – which we understand is unique – is resolved as quickly as possible, and we’ll keep you up to date with progress.”
Until the Xbox maker has sorted things out, Larian recommends that players use the developer’s own cross-save system to keep their save files secured and up to date. This allows players to upload their last five save files to Larian’s server infrastructure.
All you need to do is make an account at the official website and then link that one with your Xbox account in BG3’s main menu, where you can activate the cross-save feature by navigating to the “Gameplay” tab. Larian emphasized that it’s “important that you do not exit the game before the upload is finished” in order to keep your progress.
“If the firmware bug occurs, you will need to re-activate the cross-save functionality in the options screen. This will give you access to the save games that were successfully uploaded,” the developer stated.
In the coming days, Larian will upgrade this feature to allow players to store additional save files in this way and make the process a bit more streamlined. In any event, the hope is that players won’t need to rely on this workaround for too long – but that seems to be firmly out of Larian Studios’ hands.
