The launch of Cities: Skylines 2 is nearing and city-building enthusiasts are already raring to plan their first metropolis. One big feature of the game, its modability, won’t come into play until after it has been released, however. Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive have confirmed that mods won’t be available in the launch version of Cities: Skylines 2. Instead, they’ll be enabled in a patch post launch.

Furthermore Cities: Skylines 2 won’t feature Steam Workshop support for mods, which is a big step away from the usual policy followed by Paradox. An official statement on this topic argued that using the publisher’s own platform for mods would enable players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to gain access to mods as well – even though more complex community works will remain out of reach for console players.

Cities: Skylines 2's release is almost upon us :: Colossal Order / Paradox Interactive

This new modding platform, which is simply called Paradox Mods, has no release date as of yet. A Paradox community manager stated (via PCGamesN) that she’d “probably expect ‘days.’ [...] It’s not going to be very super close to release.”

Developer Colossal Order said it already worked with some modders from the original game on getting some mods ready for whenever the platform will go live, so expect a varied catalog of options to be available from the beginning.

Previews of Cities: Skylines 2 have already shown that Colossal Order incorporated aspects of many of the most popular mods from Cities: Skylines, so the developer definitely holds creators from the community in high regard and knows that modability is a huge aspect of what makes a fantastic city-builder.

Cities: Skylines 2 will be launched on October 24, 2023, for PC. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release has been delayed into Q2 2024. PC Game Pass subscribers will be able to play it with their membership on Day 1.
