New Dead Space mod lets you play the horror game in first person
A new Dead Space mod adds a splash of Resident Evil 7 to EA’s classic horror game, as if Dead Space wasn’t tense enough on its own. The mod, from creator ReverseEngineeringGamer, lets you play the entirety of the original Dead Space in first person, and while that might sound like a simple task for anyone who isn’t a programmer, it proved more troublesome than you might think (thanks, Eurogamer).
"The core of this mod took a little over five days to create," the modder said. "The fine tuning of this mod is what took several months; to locate functions, compare variables, stabilize pointers, write bug free scripts, play-test, etc. Although initially started out of curiosity as to see what else I can do other than create a free cam and player fly mod for Dead Space (2008), this quickly grew into a first-person mod project."
The result narrows your visual range, so you can’t see incoming threats from the side or behind anymore, but it also does away with Dead Space’s iconic health bar that’s integrated into Isaac’s suit and keeps you from checking your stasis meter. Items Isaac can interface with, including video screens that pop up and show records of the USG Ishimura, also show up in your field of vision for a nice extra bit of immersion.
Like most mods, this one only works for the PC version of Dead Space, and only for the 2008 version, which you can still purchase on Steam for $19.99.
