The Sonic the Hedgehog producer is making a Dredge movie

Story Kitchen, the studio founded by Sonic the Hedgehog producer Dimitri Johnson, is turning the cozy indie horror game Dredge into a live-action movie. Horror fishing sounds a lot like a modern adaptation of Moby Dick, but Story Kitchen calls it “The Sixth Sense on water,” a story that blends elements of Earnest Hemingway – The Old Man and the Sea, presumably – and HP Lovecraft (thanks, Variety).

Dredge developer Black Salt Games is working with Story Kitchen to bring the Dredge video game movie to life. That’s a figurative statement and a literal one, as Dredge is a live-action movie.

“We are excited to partner with such an experienced studio team to bring the world we created to live action and ignite the imagination of audiences across the globe,” Black Salt’s Nadia Thorne said in a statement.

“Dredge is a captivatingly eerie and profoundly rich story that had us completely hooked from the very beginning,” Story Kitchen’s Dimitri Johnson, Mike Goldberg,  Dan Jevons, and Timothy Stevenson said.

Dredge follows a fisher as they delve into deep waters and explore a series of islands where not all is as it seems – especially after dark, when the monsters come out. It found a welcoming audience shortly after it launched for PC on Steam in 2023 and earned several award nominations, including four BAFTAs.

Story Kitchen is behind adaptations of other popular games as well, including Netflix’s Tomb Raider series set to air later in 2024 and the upcoming Streets of Rage and It Takes Two adaptations.

Production on the Dredge film has yet to begin, and there's no anticipated release date.
