That FIFA name was, after all, just four letters on a box

The player count for EA Sports FC 24 is looking healthy: Since the soccer game launched on September 29, 2023, over 11.3 million players have been registered as logging into the game, according to GamesIndustry. Almost as many, 11.2 million users, have played EA Sports FC Mobile in a similar time frame.

“In addition to welcoming back millions of our longtime players, new players in FC 24 are up nearly 20% year over year, showing the excitement of football fans everywhere to join the Club,” the publication cited EA Sports president Cam Weber.

That should put any remaining doubts about the future of EA Sports’ soccer simulations to rest. While the company’s decision to ditch world soccer association FIFA as a partner, which had lent its name to the iconic game series for decades, certainly was a bold and shocking one, it’s also been a massive success. Without any rival product with the FIFA name – something the association apparently had no time to put together with another studio – that could have brought some confusion into the whole matter for the most casual fans, it was easy for EA Sports FC to bring its players over without any great losses.

EA Sports is now saving billions of dollars it'd otherwise have to pay for World Cup rights that are only relevant every four years and “four letters on a box,” as EA’s chief Andrew Wilson reportedly put it at one point. The studio also has more creative freedom and – going by how many in-game advertising deals it has made for this iteration – can more freely exploit the title as well in that regard.
