Bandai Namco and FromSoftware shared some good news on February 22, 2023, reporting that their open-world RPG Elden Ring had sold over 20 million copies worldwide just ahead of its first anniversary. The game launched on February 25, 2022, for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One and became an immediate hit among critics and players, winning an unprecedented amount of Game of the Year awards.

“The companies would like to thank everyone who has played this game from the bottom of their hearts, and will continue to develop various ways for the fans to enjoy the world of ‘ELDEN RING’ in the future,” Bandai Namco and FromSoftware stated in a shared press release.

That may be a confirmation of more updates coming to the game in the future, but could also be a reference to DLC or a sequel being in the works. In any case, both companies seem to be far from done with this new IP, which shouldn’t surprise anyone given the commercial success.

Elden Ring’s 20 million sold units double the amount of sales of Dark Souls 3 and begin to close in on the total sales of the Dark Souls series, which Bandai Namco and FromSoftware reported to be at 27 million ahead of Elden Ring’s own release, though the hype around the new game may also have led to additional sales of the older titles.

Being full of memorable bosses and secret endings, Elden Ring captivated players with its sheer endless amount of exploration and possibilities. The world and lore of the game is a shared brainchild of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki and iconic fantasy and science fiction author George R. R. Martin, whose cooperation was partly responsible for all the hype Elden Ring had behind it before its release – all justified, as it turned out.
