Square Enix warned customers in Japan that physical copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is launching worldwide on February 29, 2024, for PS5, received incorrect labels due to an error in the manufacturing process at Sony. FF7 Rebirth’s physical release consists of a set with two discs, which have labels clarifying the order in which they need to be inserted into the console.

Crucially, it seems like those two labels have been switched up, which could cause headaches for purchasers who are unaware of the mistake and try to install the game as instructed on the discs.

The FF7 Rebirth disc labeled “Play Disc” is actually the “Data Disc” and the one labeled “Data Disc” is the “Play Disc” – a regrettable mistake for sure, but one that won’t be too troublesome once it’s been discovered.

Simply insert the black disc labeled “Play Disc” into your PS5 first and wait until the data has been installed. Once that’s completed, insert the white disc labeled “Data Disc” to play.

It seems like this switch-up only affected physical copies of the Japanese version of FF7 Rebirth, so this is primarily something those living in Japan should be aware of. However, if you ordered a physical copy of the game from its country of origin, you’ll run into the same issue, so be aware.

Again, it’s important to emphasize that nothing is wrong with the discs themselves. They will work as they should and you’ll be able to install and play the game as normal – you just need to navigate around the incorrect labels.

Square Enix stated on its website that it was in contact with Sony about the mistake, but that the manufacturer hadn’t determined a course of action just yet.

Sony announced yesterday that it was cutting around 900 jobs worldwide from its PlayStation business.
