Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail’s new playable race is the female Hrothgar, an option players have long wanted in the MMO game after the male version debuted in 2019’s Shadowbringers expansion. Producer Naoki Yoshida showed off playable female Hrothgar characters during the FFXIV Fanfest in Tokyo, where he also revealed the full Dawntrail map and introduced the new Pictomancer job class.

Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail: Everything coming to patch 7.0

Players waited for female Hrothgar models with some trepidation, after Square Enix made female Au Ra – Final Fantasy 14’s dragon-like characters – in a way that some consider overly cutesy and out of touch with the race’s characteristics. The female Hrothgar is anything but. She reminds me a bit of the Baldur’s Gate 3 companion Karlach, with her strong physique and determined attitude.

In FF14 lore, female Hrothgar have a natural propensity for leadership, but – like male Viera – they aren’t born that often. That’s what SE says, but we’d be surprised if servers aren’t flooded with cat women after Dawntrail launches.

The first female Hrothgar you’ll meet is Wuk Lamat, voiced by Sena Bryer. She’s the daughter of the Turali chief and shows up in FF14 6.55 when it goes live on Jan. 16, 2024, and will act as a bridge of sorts connecting your post-Endwalker journey to Dawntrail.

You’ll still have to wait to change your own character’s race or make a new one as a female Hrothgar until Dawntrail launches sometime in summer 2024, though.

Final Fantasy 14 has 2,751 achievements, and one player finally got them all

Meanwhile, Square Enix is gearing up for the FF14 on Xbox open beta in February 2024.
