Dragon’s Dogma 2 outsells FF7 Rebirth in key markets
It looks like Dragon’s Dogma 2 managed to outsell fellow Japanese RPG Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth in their debut month in key European markets – according to GamesIndustry, the Capcom title barely squeezed ahead of Square Enix’s offering with the games ranking at third and fifth respectively in the UK’s charts for March 2024.
In Germany, the picture is even clearer: Dragon’s Dogma 2 debuted in third place, while FF7 – which was recorded in third place in February – did not crack the top 20 anymore, falling off completely.
Helldivers 2 managed to retain first place in the UK, becoming the main driver of a strong first quarter for video game sales, with EA Sports FC 24 coming in second. Both titles finished the month in reverse order in Germany, where Helldivers 2 had to give up its top position after its sweep in February.
According to GamesIndustry, Helldivers 2 is on track to outpace Sony’s latest big release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – though it’s a difficult comparison with one being an expensive PS5 exclusive and one being available on both PS5 and PC for a lower price. Naturally, that aspect is something to consider when evaluating the Dragon’s Dogma 2 vs. FF7 numbers as well.
Another common trend for March 2024 was the triumphant return of the Command & Conquer series, which got re-released in a massive bundle on Steam. The Ultimate Collection debuted inside the top five in Germany, while two separate Command & Conquer games entered the top ten in the UK.
EA’s iconic RTS series managed to beat Rise of the Ronin (debuted in 7th), WWE 2K24 (debuted in 8th), Princess Peach: Showtime (debuted in 12th with data for digital sales missing), and Horizon: Forbidden West’s PC release (debuted in 14th) in Germany, showing the franchise’s strong pull even after all these years – though it has to be noted that Germany has always been a particularly strong market for strategy games on PC.
In the UK, WWE 2K24 managed to squeeze between Dragon’s Dogma 2 and FF7 Rebirth, while Ronin and Peach debuted at disappointing ranks 21 and 30, respectively.
