Genshin Impact is full of deep lore that can be uncovered in story events, item descriptions, and in-game books, containing lots of information on past and present characters and groups that may yet play an important role in the game’s story. One of these powerful groups we’ve only had very brief contact with so far is the Hexenzirkel of Mondstadt.

Hexenzirkel is a German word and translates to Circle of Witches – and that’s exactly what this group is. Consisting of several powerful witches, it’s a secret organization based in Mondstadt, the City of Freedom. They are mighty enough to have challenged Barbatos, the Anemo Archon, for control of the nation, but he merely told them: “Let us make music, not war, and resolve our conflicts through song” – and that was that.

We’ve already heard a lot about Alice, the mother of Klee, and know a few bits and pieces about Rhinedottir, the creator of Albedo, and Mona’s master, but a new story teaser finally dropped some more lore on the other members of the circle. A current event in Genshin Impact 3.5, the Windblume Festival, also contains new information. We’re feasting well today, lore enjoyers.

Genshin Impact: The Mages’ Tea Party

The story teaser goes back to one of the meetings between some Hexenzirkel members, where they talk about what’s been happening to them recently in life. The following witches are there:

  • Alice, codename "A" (Klee’s mother)
  • I. Ivanovna N., codename "J"
  • Rhinedottir, codename "R" (Albedo’s creator)
  • Andersdotter, codename "M" (author of The Boar Princess)
  • Barbeloth, codename "B" (Mona’s master)

“J” (VA: Emma Romasco) reveals that she recently killed her lover out of mercy, since he was growing old and sick, “R” (VA: Ivy Dupler) talks about raising Albedo, who is her only “son” left, “M” (VA: Samantha Cooper) says that as her lifespan is shorter than that of everyone else at the table she’ll leave her book behind as a legacy (that’s The Boar Princess, one of the book series we can find and read in the game), and “B” (VA: Misty Lee) uses her skill at Astrology to scry into the future.

Alice (VA: Rachel Kimsey), who acts a narrator, is well-known for being a renowned adventurer, Klee’s mother, and a bit of a troublemaker, but the video description reveals a lot of interesting titles that are presumably used by herself:

Great Adventurer of the Realms, Dodo-King, Defender of Old Mondstadt, Friend of Adults Who Yet Harbor Hope, Author of the Teyvat Travel Guide, Originator of the Kujirai Art – Temari Jutsu, Supplier to the Renowned Lord Sangemah Bay, Elder of the Hexenzirkel, Codename "A", Mother of the Most Adorable Klee.

If you ever wondered where Dori gets her stashes of rare items, here you go: Alice is supplying her. She’s also revealed as the Elder of the Hexenzirkel, so she’s likely the leader.

Genshin Impact: Who’s part of the Hexenzirkel?

In the final quest of 3.5’s Windblume Festival event we learn that “J” is actually dead by this point and that Scarlett, whom we met during the questline, is her successor in the circle. This makes for the following known active roster of the Hexenzirkel at the time of the events of the game:

  • Alice, codename "A" (Klee’s mother)
  • Rhinedottir, codename "R" (Albedo’s creator)
  • Andersdotter, codename "M" (author of The Boar Princess)
  • Barbeloth, codename "B" (Mona’s master)
  • Mona, unknown codename
  • Nicole, codename “N”
  • Scarlett, unknown codename

This quest, Joy Above the Clouds, also revealed that Alice is known as the “One who would never lie”, Rhinedottir as “A flower that is not of this world”, Nicole as “Guide who will never get lost”, and “M” as “A legend that never ends” – yeah, all very mysterious.

The Traveler also thinks that Nicole might have been the mystery voice we heard after Inversion of Genesis, a previous story quest, to complicate things even further.
