Another weekend beckons, which will have most people breathe a sigh of relief. Things are a little different for the developers at Arrowhead, the studio behind Helldivers 2. Despite updates and capacity upgrades, the situation with the game’s server issues has remained tense – and with an influx of players to be expected over the free days, it’s going to be a nerve-wrecking weekend for the team.

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt stated that the studio “updated the max CCU cap to 700,000” as preparation for the weekend. However, he added: “Unfortunately, we expect the CCU to reach that level.” This would mean that players might face queue times once again when logging in, though Pilestedt added that these would be “much more bearable” than before.

Helldivers 2’s previous peak concurrent user count on Steam was at over 450,000, which sent the game’s servers through the wringer and resulted in people being unable to log in. However, recent updates such as patch 1.000.11, which introduced a feature that auto-kicks AFK players, and the mentioned server upgrades have made the experience far more stable for people – at least during the working week.

Naturally, the upcoming weekend is going to be another test as the popularity of Helldivers 2 keeps spreading and more players rope in their friends to fight for space democracy together in the third-person co-op shooter.

Arrowhead keeps monitoring the situation, of course, but there is probably little it can do in terms of emergency measures, should push come to shove this next weekend. The community around Helldivers 2 is remaining remarkably positive in spite of these frustrations. One of the reasons is probably the studio’s transparent communication policy as well as the game itself being tons of fun – once you can get onto the servers, that is.
