The release of Homeworld 3 has been delayed to February 2024, developer Blackbird Interactive and publisher Gearbox have announced. The space strategy game was originally intended to be launched in 2022 before a delay to the first half of 2023 was announced. Now fans will have to be patient for another seven to eight months.

“Our primary goal is to deliver a Homeworld experience that lives up to the standards set by its predecessors and is worthy of this series’ incredible legacy,” a statement made on the game’s Twitter account said. “Homeworld 3 is shaping up to be exactly that, but in order to fully realize that vision we need more time to refine and polish the game. We deeply appreciate your passion and dedication to this game, and we are working hard to get Homeworld 3 to you as soon as we can.”

The original Homeworld, which was developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra, launched in 1999 and was a technological leap in the strategy game genre by fully enabling the use of three-dimensional space instead of having all the action happen on a two-dimensional map.

Aside from a single-player campaign, Homeworld 3 is planned to include a co-op mode with roguelike elements, in which one or two players take on a randomized series of challenges with a fleet that persists in-between these fights. Each victory unlocks powerful rewards and depending on how far players can make it, they’ll earn boons that can help them out in future runs. Traditional multiplayer modes like 1v1, team battles, and free-for-all will be included as well.

Homeworld 3 will be the second title of the series developed by Blackbird, which was already responsible for the creation of ground-based prequel Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak. PC is the only platform the game will be released on.
