Neocore’s dark fantasy turn-based tactical RPG King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is getting a brand-new expansion in early 2024. King Arthur: Legion IX features an army of Roman zombies – yeah, you are reading this right – invading the Isle of Avalon to establish a colony there. Oh, and you’re not defending Avalon against this undead onslaught, but are instead leading it. How’s that for a fresh perspective?

Legion IX comes with a new campaign, which “will detail how the Legion prepares for an invasion and uncovers the remains of a Roman colony in Avalon. The new protagonist must reveal the hidden secrets of the Lady of the Lake.” The expansion features new heroes, enemies, and combat mechanics for the game, which puts a dark fantasy spin on the Arthurian legend.

In addition, the developer has announced that King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on February 22, 2024.

PC players can look forward to the big 2.0 update for the base game on December 2, 2023. On Steam, the game is currently discounted by 40%. King Arthur: Knight’s Tale has received “Very Positive” reviews on the platform with over 4,600 reviews being counted.

Legio IX Hispana has become a staple of Arthurian mythology in the last two decades, being connected with the legend through movies like the star-studded King Arthur (2004) or The Last Legion (2007) in pop culture. These, in turn, were inspired by academic works looking into possible non-Celtic roots of the stories.

This Roman legion was stationed in Britain in the first century CE and completely vanished from records in the second century without any sources mentioning what became of it. This led to much speculation about its fate in academic circles and gave inspiration to fiction writers, which eventually led to a connection with the Arthur legend.

One thing is for certain: King Arthur: Legion IX will bring us an interpretation of events that hasn’t been presented before.
