Production is almost underway for Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie, and it looks like Jack Black has a starring role in the video game adaptation. A new report from Deadline says that Black, who voiced Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, will play Steve in the live-action Minecraft movie.

The report is unconfirmed at present, as is pretty much everything else about the Minecraft movie, aside from the fact that Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones) will star in it.

Emma Meyers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia), and Eugene Hansen (Just Mercy) will also star alongside Momoa and Black.

The open world sandbox games that you need to play

It’s a busy season for Black. The actor recently won an Emmy for his performance as Po in Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight and reprised that role in the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 4, which releases in theaters on March 8, 2024. He’s also one of the stars in Lionsgate’s Borderlands movie, which is finally set to release in August 2024, nearly a decade after the concept first appeared and four years after Lionsgate revived it with a script from The Last of Us writer Craig Mazin.

Mojang’s Minecraft launched in 2011 and gradually became one of the best sandbox games and builders on PC, console, and mobile devices, with multiple free updates adding new biomes, better ways of creating, and unique ways of interacting with your environment.

It spawned several spinoffs, including the Diablo-like Minecraft Dungeons and 2023’s RTS game Minecraft Legends, and it made Mojang attractive enough to warrant Microsoft’s attention and an acquisition deal in 2014.
