Baldur’s Gate 3, Honkai: Star Rail, and Alan Wake 2 win at the 13th New York Game Awards
The 2024 New York Game Awards, given out by a circle of critics, writers, and journalists from the United States, have a bit of a confusing name – though they use 2024 in their title, they are recognizing titles that have been released in 2023. This approach at least avoids one of the less ideal aspects of The Game Awards, which can’t consider releases from late in the year and has to roll them into next year’s show, leading to confusion as well – there is no perfect solution for this.
Luckily, this round of awards pretty much confirmed the consensus reached by shows held last year: Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Game of the Year, pinning another accolade on Larian Studios’ more than deserving RPG. In addition, Herman Melville won the show’s award for Best Writing in a Game, marking another BG3 victory.
Like in many other award shows, Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 got recognized as well, taking home the Award for Best World on top of Saga Anderson actress Melanie Liburd winning Best Acting in a Game, while HoYoverse’s Honkai: Star Rail grabbed yet another Best Mobile Game trophy – though fans shouldn’t expect any more celebratory freebies at this point. Both Alan Wake 2 and Honkai: Star Rail have been frequently recognized throughout the 2023/24 awards season, making them as much consensus picks as Baldur’s Gate 3.
Chants of Sennar won Best Indie Game at the show, while Asgard’s Wrath 2 got to celebrate an expected and well-deserved victory in the Best AR/VR Game category. There is little surprise about some of the other winners as well: Hi-Fi Rush took Best Music in a Game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder won Best Kids Game, Resident Evil 4 took Best Remake, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was recognized as Best DLC.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which was nominated for three categories, didn’t take home a trophy, which was probably the night’s biggest surprise. There is still time to make up for this, though, with shows like the annual DICE Awards and the Game Developers Choice Awards coming up.
