Envision Entertainment has announced that the city-builder Pioneers of Pagonia, which was released into Early Access for PC via Steam on December 13, 2023, has already sold over 100,000 copies in its first week on the market – a huge success for the indie game.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported and contributed to the game,” a celebratory message on the title’s Discord server stated. “We are overjoyed to reach this milestone and can’t wait to start the new year with the same spirit!”

Led by The Settlers creator Volker Wertich, Envision’s newest project is a spiritual successor to the renowned city-building series, which has an especially devoted following in Germany, where the indie studio is based. Pioneers of Pagonia is all about economy and logistics with only very light combat elements. Players are tasked with building up and expanding their town, managing many different production chains at the same time. Like The Settlers, Pioneers of Pagonia is a relaxed and laid-back experience – a slow burner, you could say. You’ll have plenty of time while playing to zoom in and enjoy the lovely animations of your workers producing goods, which show the process from start to finish in real time.

Cracking a milestone of 100,000 sales ahead of Christmas is probably not what the team has expected, but bodes well for the future of the game’s development. At almost 1,500 Steam reviews, the game is currently rated “Very Positive” – without the ambitious update process towards the full release even having fully begun. Not to say that there haven’t been any: Since release, three patches have been pushed out already.

During a recent session with the press, Volker Wertich went into some detail about the next steps of development, which were later shared with the community. The roadmap contains feature additions like more production chains – fishing is a big one Wertich already told us about at gamescom 2023, but gold and gem mining are included, too – as well as improvements and upgrades for the user interface. Big additions like co-op gameplay are to be found on the agenda as well.

Looks like Envision will be very motivated to get back to work after a break for the holidays, because the people demand more Wuselfaktor.
