The Pokémon Company has made an announcement that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will soon be compatible with Pokémon Home. Pokémon Home is a hub where you can add Pokémon from various games and transfer them into the games you want to use them in. The latest update means that Home is now compatible with all mainline Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Go, and the DS games via Pokémon Bank.

The update will launch on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, and players will be able to begin transferring their ‘mons from this date. The usual rules will apply. Pokémon can only be moved between compatible games; for example you can not transfer new Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet to Sword and Shield. However, there will be bonuses available for those who link the latest games to the service.

Scarlet and Violet players will earn three Pokémon the first time they link their games to home. Each game will receive one of each of the starter ‘mons; Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. What makes these Pokémon particularly exciting is that they come with their hidden abilities, which are some of the best in the game. Sprigatito will come with Protean, which changes its weak typing to that of the first move it uses, Fuecoco will have Unaware, which ignores foes’ stat changes, and Quaxly has Moxie, which raises its attack every time it knocks out another Pokémon.

Alongside the new compatibility update, there will be an update to how Home works. You will now be able to change your Pokémon’s moveset using Home, and teach it moves that it previously used to know. As new moves cannot be transferred to older games this is particularly helpful for those who need to change their Pokémons’ movesets in order to trade them backwards.

The new update will change the way that people play Scarlet and Violet, as previously there were only around 400 Pokémon in the game. The update will allow over 1000 Pokémon to be playable and could have implications for changes coming to competitive ranked matches in the future.
