PUBG celebrates Rondo map release with live-action short film
It’s a day to be celebrated for popular battle royale title PUBG, as the game added its tenth map today in the form of Rondo. Players on PC can already jump into the new battleground, while the console community will have to be patient until December 14, 2023.
To somewhat sweeten that waiting period and celebrate PUBG in general, KRAFTON teamed up with director Sam Hargrave, who produced a short film starring Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae and Daniel Wu, who starred in Westworld and Tomb Raider, among other titles. Both of them act as squad leaders in an intense real-world match of PUBG showcasing vastly different leadership styles – and they have some personal history to work out as well.
It’s a fun action flick eight minutes long and filled with PUBG easter eggs. If you ever wondered how some of those ridiculous skins would look like in real life, this is your chance to find out.
Naturally, one character at some point grabs a frying pan to take someone out in melee combat, while the welding helmet prominently depicted on the game’s key art gets a moment to shine in the spotlight as well. It’s all a little ridiculous and campy, just like the universe the game is set in, so it honestly feels like a fun and “authentic” representation of what PUBG is.
Rondo is a China-inspired map and the biggest battlefield PUBG has had so far, featuring terrain like old temple complexes, bamboo forests, serene lakes surrounded by impressive mountain pillars, a neon-lit city, and a large factory area.
Tactical innovations include destructible bamboo as well as escalators allowing for quick building traversal. A new 9mm submachine gun, the JS9, is available on Rondo to serve in the brutal and intense close combat scenarios the map offers.
Starting today and lasting until December 20, 2023, PUBG’s Rondo Royale Celebration features tons of events and giveaways as well as a Twitch Drop program.
