Star Wars KOTOR Remake still alive, Jason Schreier says
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is still being worked on by Saber Interactive according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who based this on statements from two people at the development studio.
After Embracer Group’s CEO Lars Wingefors refused to comment on the status of the KOTOR Remake during the company’s latest earnings call, gaming journalist Jeff Grubb stated during a podcast appearance that the game was not being worked on, pronouncing the project dead. This was picked up and widely spread by reports, but is now being contradicted by Schreier.
He also posted a comment on a ResetEra thread discussing Grubb’s statement: “‘Is it alive?’ and ‘Will it ever actually come out?’ are two very different questions. A third is ‘If it does ever come out, what will it actually look like?’ That said, I've talked to two people at Saber who both say they're still currently working on it, so I don't believe that the comment that it isn't being worked on ‘in any way’ right now is true.”
When it comes to inside information, Schreier has a more solid reputation than Grubb, who also didn’t mention where his own information came from. Subsequent articles that declared the title dead picked up Grubb’s comments and simply ran with them as fact.
Schreier’s statement would confirm the official status of the project as listed in Embracer’s latest earnings report, which has the KOTOR Remake in development at an internal studio and published by an external party – those would be Saber Interactive and Sony, respectively. While no one can say if the project will actually ever result in a released game, as Schreier himself wrote, it's unlikely to be completely dead.
Last year, Schreier was the one to report that the game’s initial developer, Aspyr, had been taken off the project in favor of its parent company, Saber Interactive, after a demo of the game shown to executives didn’t fulfill expectations. He wrote today: “The demo wasn't egregiously bad or anything like that. The bigger issue was misalignment between all the parties about scope and how much progress they could make within a given timeline.”
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is supposed to come out for PC and PS5.
