The Last of Us Part 2 PS5 version spotted in store backend
Update (November 20, 2023): Naughty Dog has confirmed The Last of Us 2 Remastered following the game's appearance in the PlayStation database.
Original (November 17, 2023): The existence of a rumored The Last of Us Part 2 version for PS5 – and, potentially, PC – has been an open secret for a while now. From Naughty Dog job postings and a tease by composer Gustavo Santaolalla to a direct confirmation by someone involved in the development on social media, there were more than enough hints to paint a pretty clear picture.
An even stronger clue is out there now, unearthed by PlayStation Game Size, which specializes in data mining the PlayStation Store for information like the download sizes of upcoming games. They posted the cover from The Last of Us Part 2, connecting it to PS5 and clarifying that the PS5 version would be the game’s “native version,” indicating that it would be a new version of the title, which was released in 2020 for PS4.
The original game got a full-on remake for PS5 in 2022 and a PC port in early 2023, but that does not mean that this newly spotted version will be a complete remake as well – with how late in the PS4 lifecycle the game dropped, the amount of technical improvements to be made is probably quite small. It may simply be an upgrade more akin to a remaster or director’s cut, with additions like more accessibility modes, more audio support, support for PS5 DualSense controllers, and small-scale visual improvements. Just like with the first game’s remake, the PC port could follow suit shortly afterwards – with fewer issues, hopefully. All that, of course, is mere speculation at this point.
All we know for certain is that a PS5 version for The Last of Us Part 2 has been spotted in the PlayStation Store’s backend.
It’s been theorized that this game could be dropped alongside the launch of the second season for HBO’s The Last of Us series, but if preparations are already underway behind the scenes, this seems rather unlikely.
