Not sure what’s there to remaster, though

The Last Of Us Part 2 isn’t exactly an old game, having been released in 2020 for the PS4 and possessing a high performance mode for playing it on PS5, but it seems like Naughty Dog isn’t done milking its popular franchise with remasters: The heavily rumored The Last Of Us Part 2: Remastered seems to be real.

Naughty Dog’s Lead Outsource Artist mentioned “overseeing the production of all outsourced environment art assets, weapons and interactive props for two iconic titles The Last of Us: Part One and The Last of Us 2: Remastered” on their LinkedIn profile (via ResetEra).

From a business perspective, this move would certainly make sense: Naughty Dog seems to need additional time to get its The Last of Us multiplayer game out of the door, so pushing out remastered versions of its existing titles in the meantime is a sound strategy, especially due to the ongoing momentum and hype the series has from the successful HBO show. Strike the iron while it's hot, right?

Coordinating the release of The Last Of Us Part 2: Remastered on PS5 – and perhaps porting it to PC – with the launch of the show’s second season sounds like a sure money-maker.

Fan reactions range from being hyped about this reveal to being astonished at the greed behind this move. Again, the game is only three years old and looks stunning. It’s hard to fathom what exactly a remastered version could provide in terms of upgrades that would be worth what – let’s be cynical together for a moment – is likely going to be a full-price $70 USD release.

Naughty Dog has not officially confirmed The Last Of Us Part 2: Remastered, but it looks like the cat’s firmly out of the bag now.
