The Witcher remake will be an open-world reimagining
CD Projekt Red is remaking the first The Witcher game, and it's going to be more like The Witcher 3 in terms of structure, featuring a fully open world.
When CD Project Red first started making The Witcher, it didn't have the budget for massive sandbox games. Of course, that's all changed since the success of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
The company confirmed the change in direction for the remake in a recent investor report, which confirmed it will be open world and called it a "modern reimagining" of the RPG.
In the original game, players explored linear maps and moved from story moment to story moment, with the odd optional quest tucked away in caves and dungeons. It looks like the remake will be closer to The Witcher 3, allowing you to explore the world as you wish and choose whatever contracts take your fancy.
Work on the remake is currently being done by Fool's Theory, under the supervision of CDPR itself. This could change as development progresses, of course. CDPR recently made the decision to bring its upcoming next-gen update for The Witcher 3 in-house after originally being contracted out.
Some of the developers at Fool's Theory have previously worked on The Witcher games, and CDPR studio head Adam Badowski says "they know the source material well, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games".
Elsewhere, CDPR is also working on a brand-new Witcher trilogy, as well as a new Cyberpunk game, DLC, and more.
