Creative Assembly has confirmed that Aekold Helbrass will be the free Legendary Hero coming to Total War: Warhammer 3 with the game’s Update 4.0, which is going to arrive alongside the Shadows of Change DLC on August 31, 2023. Since the forces of Tzeentch will already gain a new Legendary Lord with The Changeling and another Legendary Hero with The Blue Scribes as part of the DLC, the Lord of Change should be more than happy with this development.

Aekold Helbrass is quite a unique character in Tzeentch’s line-up, since he’s very much a melee character and doesn’t deal with magic a whole lot – a huge contrast to the stuff that Chaos Gods’s followers are typically into.

Looking very sparkly today, Mr. Helbrass / Creative Assembly

Being born a noble of the Empire, Aekold succumbed to Chaos and escaped from the clutches of the Witch Hunters, traveling to the Northern Chaos Wastes where he and his horse slowly began to mutate. Lethally wounded in a duel against his mirrored self, Tzeentch inducted him into the ranks of his champions, saving him from death and taking him into his service.

He’ll definitely be available for the Daemons of Tzeentch, but we don’t know at this point if he’ll also be available for the Warriors of Chaos. In any case, you’ll be able to recruit Aekold during a campaign by fulfilling his recruitment quest once it’s been given to you, which usually happens fairly early in the game.

Helbrass follows in the footsteps of Ulrika Magdova and Harald Hammerstorm, who’ve been released as free Legendary Heroes in previous updates.

Update 4.0 includes sweeping improvements to the campaign AI, garrisons, additional campaign map landmark buildings, and expanded difficulty settings, which should help players tune their experience.
