Creative Assembly has returned to its offices after a break for the holidays and revealed that fans can expect the free Shadows of Change content update to arrive in Total War: Warhammer 3 in February 2024 alongside Update 4.2. A smaller Hotfix with some bug fixes will be released inside the next two weeks as well.

The Shadows of Change DLC was launched last year to much controversy, as the community perceived it to be lacking in content compared to the high asking price. Creative Assembly first responded by justifying the price with the economic situation, which led to the community going into full revolt, including review-bombing Total War products. This public campaign on top of the calls for a boycott working for once seems to have changed the minds at Creative Assembly – though it’s very likely that the sudden cancellation of its costly shooter Hyenas helped with that.

With Sega calling for Creative Assembly to focus on Total War again, the British developer has switched up its strategy and announced that it would add more content to Shadows of Change for free to make it worth the asking price. It also started to release patches for the game to fix bugs in regular intervals to address community concerns more quickly.

These measures have largely begun to change the community’s mood into a more positive one and earn the developer some trust once more, but February’s release of the free update is going to be a make-or-break moment: If the players perceive the content on offer too weak to justify the price for Shadows of Change, all that good work may yet be undone.

Recently, information found on IMDB hinted at Naryaska Leysa and Tigermen coming to Total War: Warhammer 3. It’s unclear whether they’ll be part of the free content drop or will join the game in some later DLC, though Naryaska would definitely be a perfect Legendary Hero for Kislev and is thus a likely addition to the make-up package. Things are less clear-cut for the Tigermen, which are either an addition for Cathay or an early hint towards an expansion in the direction of the Kingdoms of Ind.

In any case, the next couple of weeks should be exciting ones for Total War: Warhammer fans.
