Supermassive’s award-winning horror game Until Dawn is the latest video game adaptation in the works, helmed by Shazam director David Sandberg. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who say that Sandberg invited Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman to give the script a pass, after The Invitation writer Amy Blair wrote the first draft.

The Until Dawn movie is part of a first-look deal between Dauberman and Sony where Dauberman promised to write horror films for the entertainment giant. Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions are also producing the film.

The best video game movies ever

Until Dawn follows a group of young adults on a camping retreat, and if you’re familiar with horror at all, you already know that’s a recipe for disaster. In Until Dawn, it’s also a recipe for cannibalism, historical disasters, murder, and death, and depending on your choices, not everyone will make it through the night until… well, until dawn.

The game earned recognition with several award nominations after it released in 2015, and it won the 2016 BAFTA for best new original property.

How Dauberman and Sandberg will approach Supermassive’s game remains a mystery for now. Even the logline is a secret, but The Hollywood Reporter says that production company Screen Gems is calling it an “R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast.” Who actually comprises that cast is also a mystery.

Until Dawn is the latest in a long line of video game adaptations, including the hit horror indie game Martha is Dead and Sony’s The Last of Us.
