Owlcat announced that Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has sold over 500,000 copies in its first month. The CRPG was released on December 7, 2023, and it looks like it was able to gain something of a boost from last year’s hype around fellow genre representative Baldur’s Gate 3. Ahead of launch, the developers told us that they were hoping to benefit from the attention that Larian Studios’ phenomenal hit brought to the CRPG category – a gambit that paid off.

In addition to announcing this important sales milestone, Owlcat published a massive update for the game with over 1,800 fixes. Typically for the developer, the game’s launch was fraught with a range of technical issues that marred the otherwise fantastic experience. Update 1.1.28, as the major patch is called, hopes to fix many of these problems.

Highlights of the patch include brand-new voice lines for the Prologue as well as general chatter between companions, new visual effects and icons, fixes for key quests such as the Price of Humanity mission, and the reputation thresholds for the different merchant factions being lowered. Performance problems and AI improvements are on the agenda as well, with NPCs now hopefully being less trigger-happy when it comes to friendly fire.

Tons of balance changes have been made in the update, but one main focus was Ulfar – a Space Marine companion the player can pick up during the game. He gained basic stats, a set of unique starting equipment, and improved abilities. Plus, allies can now use the towering super soldier as cover. There is also great news for Marazhai and Yrliet, who are now able to use many items that were restricted to humans before – which, really, made little sense for the two Eldar.

You can find the full change log on the game’s official website.

This has pretty much always been the way with Owlcat’s excellent CRPGs – they are fantastic when it comes to the world, atmosphere, and mechanics, but so full of bugs and balance issues that it can be hard to fully enjoy them at launch. Wait for a few months, though, and you’re in for a treat. It looks like Rogue Trader follows that story.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
