The tabletop heritage in Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, an upcoming RTS made by Frontier Developments, is strong – as it should be. Every unit looks like it came straight from someone’s model collection and this attention to detail is lovely for fans of the setting.

A big part of the hobby, of course, is the ability to be creative and make your army your own. You can do this in many ways, from theming the model bases in a certain way to kitbashing or simply by giving the models a distinct paint job – and that’s exactly what Frontier will allow you to do in Realms of Ruin as well: The studio has announced (via Steam) that the game would launch with a feature it calls Army Livery, “a system that allows you to personalize your forces with paint from the Games Workshop's Citadel collection.”

The Army Livery feature, which was announced on Steam, allows you to visually customize your armies / Frontier

Players of Total War: Warhammer have wanted an army painter like this ever since the first title in the trilogy launched many years ago, but never actually got a similar feature. It looks like the team over at Frontier preempted such demands by giving players this tool from the start – big win.

Speaking of great features, there is even more where that came from. In addition to Army Livery, Realms of Ruin will contain a map editor that will allow players to make their own skirmish maps. It “utilizes the same tools used to create existing maps in the game,” the developers stated. This is another important addition to the game, as many RTS games draw from the community’s skill and creativity in the long run when it comes to maps.

Finally, Frontier announced that Realms of Ruin will include a feature called the Scene Editor. This enabled users to “place and pose characters and props in creatively curated and shareable scenes.” It’s basically a cool way to show off those troops you painstakingly painted and gives players another way to engage with the content of the title creatively. Again, quite a smart addition that will bring joy to some of the users.

These feature announcements follow up on a wave of news around the RTS revealed at gamescom 2023, where Frontier showed off the Nighthaunt – the third of four playable factions – and Conquest Mode, a procedurally generated single-player campaign mode that adds replayability value to the title. We’ve also had the opportunity to get hands-on with the campaign recently, so be sure to catch our preview.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin will be released on November 17, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
