Nintendo and The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma finally revealed some gameplay footage from Tears of the Kingdom, which is going to release on May 12, 2023, on Nintendo Switch. In a video showing around ten minutes of gameplay, we got a proper look at what Nintendo has been working on for so long since the game’s predecessor, Breath of the Wild, came out.

The new Recall ability will come in handy for climbing those new sky islands. It allows you to turn back time for single objects, like rocks that fell from one of those flying pieces of land. You can let Link stand on one of these rocks, use Recall, and ascend into the heavens as they return to their original position.

Were you annoyed by your weapons breaking all the time in Breath of the Wild? Well, Tears of the Kingdom has something to help you out: By using the Fuse ability, you can melt objects together to get all kinds of useful (and presumably less useful) results. A stick and big burly boulder resulted in a giant hammer in the gameplay showcase, while gluing a Puffshroom to Link’s shield made the protective device go ‘boom’ when it was attacked.

You’ll need more power to interact with larger objects, though, which is where Ultrahand comes in. This ability enables you to build your own vehicles to traverse this vastly changed Hyrule on land, in the water, or in the skies.

The final ability Mr. Aonuma showed off during this gameplay video is called Ascend. It’s a pretty neat one: You can use it to pass through any terrain directly above you. This makes it very easy to quickly get up a tower or building, but you can also be creative and use it to climb an entire mountain. Just find a cave, get in a bit deeper, and use Ascend to make your way to the top.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has a lot of new possibilities in store for players, clearly building on the fantastic foundations of Breath of the Wild to create an even bigger and more liberating adventure than this groundbreaking hit.
