Caitlin Clark Dropped a Classic Quip Moments After Breaking NCAA Scoring Record
Iowa star guard Caitlin Clark stands alone atop the NCAA women’s basketball career scoring list, having broken the record previously held by Washington’s Kelsey Plum on Thursday night.
Clark surged to the record by scoring the No. 4 Hawkeyes’ first eight points against visiting Michigan, and she tallied 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting by halftime. Iowa led Michigan 53–41 at intermission, but the lead wasn’t enough for Clark’s liking, as she revealed to Peacock sideline reporter Caroline Pineda before heading to the locker room.
“What does this record mean to you?” Pineda asked.
“You know, it’s cool to be in the realm of a lot of really, really good players,” Clark replied. “I’m lucky to do it because I’ve got really good teammates, really good coaches and a great support system that surrounds me. But ...
“We need to play better defense.”
Classic.
Clark went on to score a career-best 49 points in leading Iowa (23–3, 12–2 Big Ten) to a 106–89 over Michigan (16–10, 7–7).
The Hawkeyes play next at No. 14 Indiana (21–3, 12–2) on Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. ET. That telecast also is exclusively on Peacock.
