Podcast: Inside Detroit Lions Preseason Television Broadcast

Latest "Bang The Table" Detroit Lions podcast features guest Jason Ross Jr.

In a few short years, Jason Ross Jr. has emerged as one of the most talented sports broadcasters calling a variety of sporting events.

All Lions had the pleasure of working with the young broadcaster a few years ago, and his rise up the ranks of the sports broadcasting world is no surprise to anyone who has observed his drive to succeed.

Walking into a routine training camp practice, I spotted our former colleague, and was pleasantly surprised to learn about the opportunity he earned to be the Lions play-by-play preseason television voice.

"Life always seems to come full circle. As a Michigan native and Detroit Lions fan, I am honored to have the opportunity to be a voice for a team that means so much to my family," said Ross Jr., via the Lions team website. "I can't wait for the first preseason game with our awesome TV crew!"

Of course, I tuned in to enjoy the television broadcast when the Lions played the Giants at Ford Field. But, as is the case sometimes, an unforeseen circumstance muted the game, in favor of reporting on inclement weather spotted in the area.

The break lasted nearly a full quarter, and sparked debate online.

"We definitely kept broadcasting, and the mindset was to kind of have blinders on that we didn't really -- no one really says in your ear that's happening, in that situation on a local network. But, understandable," Ross Jr. said. "There was a tornado in the area. So, the local network has to take priority on weather there. I know some people weren't too happy with that. We understood it.

"I had a couple people tell me that, just text message-wise. But, actually, when we're calling the game, I don't know if really several people in our crew even knew that was happening, because the mindset is just keep calling the game."

The latest "Bang The Table" podcast features our conversation with Ross Jr. regarding his first experience calling a Lions preseason game.
