Reds starter Mat Latos will make his 2014 debut in Milwaukee on Saturday night, the team announced on Friday.

Latos has been on the disabled list all year after offseason surgery to remove a bone chip from his throwing elbow. He also tore cartilage in his left knee while rehabbing and had surgery on that before developing soreness in his pitching forearm.

Latos is 55-40 with a 3.35 ERA in five big-league seasons — three with the Padres and two with the Reds. He went 14-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 32 starts last season. Until these injuries, the 26-year-old had been extremely durable.

Alfredo Simon went 9-3 with a 2.95 ERA in Latos' absence. He could move back to the bullpen or Tony Cingrani could be tabbed for the 'pen.

The Reds (31-34) are in fourth place in the NL Central, eight games behind the Brewers, entering Friday’s series opener in Milwaukee.
