CFL Sack Leader Worked Out for Cleveland Browns
BC Lions defensive lineman Mathieu Betts has caught NFL teams’ attention after participating in his second workout within a few days last week. This time, the Cleveland Browns brought Betts in for a workout Friday.
The last two seasons have been special for Betts, with 2023 being his best as a professional football player. He finished with 42 defensive tackles, two special teams tackles, a CFL-leading 18 sacks and four forced fumbles in all 18 games.
Betts was selected to his first CFL All-Star and CFL West All-Star selections since joining the league in 2019. He was also named as the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
He had his breakout in 2022 with significantly more playing time, totaling 28 total tackles and seven sacks in 18 games. His career started with Edmonton, playing two seasons and appearing in 19 games. Edmonton selected Betts as the third overall pick in the 2019 CFL Draft.
Before the CFL, he wasn’t drafted into the NFL but got a chance to play with the Chicago Bears. Betts was a part of the final roster cuts that occurred before the 2019 regular season.
The Detroit Lions had Betts in for a workout earlier in the week. There appears to be a path for Betts to sign with the NFL. If not, he will be a free agent in February. CFL.ca had him ranked No. 2 in the top 30 CFL free agents for 2024.
