Calgary Stampeders Bring Back Ace Kicker Rene Paredes

The Calgary Stampeders have re-signed their long-time kicker Rene Paredes to a new contract.

Calgary is bringing back one of its most reliable, longest-tenured players.

The Stampeders announced Friday that they re-signed kicker Rene Paredes on a one-year contract that will keep him in Calgary through the 2024 season.

“Spending 13 years with one organization is a blessing and I’m excited to be back with the Red and White,” Paredes said in a statement Friday. “I will do what I can to get this organization back to winning games and hopefully a championship.”

Paredes is considered one of the best kickers in CFL history, despite the shaky start to his career. The now-38-year-old first attended training camp with Winnipeg in 2010 before returning to university. He then went undrafted in the 2011 CFL Draft and attended another training camp with the Blue Bombers, but he again failed to make the final roster.

After being cut in 2011, Paredes signed with Calgary and has been kicking for the Stampeders ever since, converting 91.7 percent of his field goals since 2016. He has been a CFL All-Star five times and CFL West All-Star six times, and also took home the John Agro Special Teams Award in 2013 as the CFL’s most outstanding special teams player.

Last season, Paredes led the CFL in field goals with 52 and accounted for 185 points for Calgary. He was nominated for the Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award for the seventh time in his long career. Paredes also hit some career milestones in 2023, including 200 regular-season games played and 2,000 career points.

Calgary finished the 2023 season with a 6-12 record, losing in the West Semi-Final against the BC Lions.
