Calgary Stampeders Bring Back Defensive Lineman on Two-Year Deal

The Calgary Stampeders bring back a key piece to their roster with the signing of defensive lineman James Vaughters.

As the Calgary Stampeders look to keep key players on their roster, they made a move to sign defensive lineman James Vaughters. The team made the announcement that Vaughters agreed to a two-year contract through the 2025 season.

Vaughters began his professional football career in the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2015, spending time on their practice squad before being cut in the middle of the season. He signed with the New England Patriots at the end of the season before being cut in May 2016.

Initially, he signed with the Stampeders in 2016m but got another shot at the NFL with the San Diego Chargers before being cut before training camp. Vaughters came back to Calgary playing two seasons and 33 games from 2017-18, recording 50 tackles, 11 sacks and eight special teams tackles. He was a member of their Grey Cup championship team.

The NFL came calling once again for Vaughters as he would spend time with three teams including the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers from 2019-22. His current NFL stats include 33 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble.

Vaughters returned to Calgary for the 2023 season, where he got off to a fast start with five sacks in the first games. He would suffer an arm injury in the sixth game that would cost him the rest of the season.

Going into the 2024 season, the Stampeders should see Vaughters back in the rotation on the defensive line with the hopes of picking up from where he left off in 2023.
