Stampeders Agree to Terms with Former Hamilton QB Matthew Shiltz
Things are getting interesting in Calgary as the Stampeders have added another quarterback to the roster. 3DownNation’s Justin Dunk reported Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms with former Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Matthew Shiltz.
Shiltz played the best football of his career last season with the Tiger-Cats, throwing for a career-high 1,556 passing yards and seven touchdowns to five interceptions in 11 games. He filled in as the starter with multiple injuries at the quarterback position, including day one starter Bo Levi Mitchell.
In 2022, his first season with Hamilton, he threw for 935 yards and four touchdowns to two interceptions. The previous four seasons were spent with the Montreal Alouettes as their backup quarterback. He finished with 1,866 yards and eight touchdowns to 11 interceptions from 2017 through 2021.
The 31-year-old quarterback might be seen as competition with Jake Maier as the leading man. Tommy Stevens is more of a short-yardage, sneak-type player, and fellow quarterbacks Chris Reynolds and Logan Bonner are also on the roster.
While Maier will most likely be the starting quarterback in Week 1, Shiltz will be able to push him in training camp as the team needs Maier to make big strides in 2024.
Calgary has some work to do in free agency with 18 players who are still pending free agents. Shiltz cannot officially sign with the Stampeders until February 13.
