Edmonton Elks Add Two Playmaking Receivers
As the offseason rolls on, the Edmonton Elks focus on the offensive side of the ball and added some key playmakers to the roster.
The team announced the signings of American wide receivers Danny Davis III and Jerminic Smith to contracts.
Davis played five seasons at Wisconsin, recording 131 receptions for 1,642 yards and 14 touchdowns in 51 games played. In his senior season back in 2021, he was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team.
He went to training camp with the Green Bay Packers in 2022 after going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. His breakout game of the preseason was against the San Francisco 49ers, catching two passes for 45 yards and one touchdown. Davis was cut by the Packers in August.
Smith played his college football with Iowa for the first two years before going to Southwest Baptist University in 2017. He would join the CFL with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2019 where he caught eight passes for 87 yards.
Where Smith has thrived has been with the Indoor Football League where he played the last two seasons with the Frisco Fighters. In 31 games, he recorded 143 catches for 1,813 yards and 33 scores. He received first-team All-IFL honors in 2022.
Edmonton finished tied with Ottawa for the league’s worst record with a 4-14 record in 2023. Going into the offseason, the Redblacks have 18 pending free agents hitting the market.
