Defensive Back Re-Signs with Calgary Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders, coming off a 6-12 season and playoff berth, re-signed defensive back Malcolm Thompson.

Looking to keep depth and experience in the defensive backfield, the Calgary Stampeders re-signed defensive back Malcolm Thompson to a new contract.

Thompson signed with Calgary in September and appeared in four regular-season games, recording one defensive tackle and one special teams tackle. While he suited up for their Western Semi-Final matchup, he did not record any stats.

His previous CFL career experience includes a training camp appearance with Calgary in 2021, and stints with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In total, he has played in 16 games, recording 24 defensive tackles, eight special teams tackles and one fumble recovery.

While playing at Ontario University, Thompson recorded 81 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, seven interceptions, 16 pass deflections and two fumble recoveries in 24 games. He was named an OUA All-Star three times from 2015 through 2019.

The Stampeders are coming off a playoff season, but it didn't feel like it. Calgary finished 6-12 in the West Division and claimed the third playoff spot out of the division. The season ended with a 40-31 loss to the BC Lions.

Calgary hasn’t been to the Grey Cup since winning the title in 2018 over Ottawa. The Stampeders are hoping for a turnaround in 2024.

Signing Thompson was the second move made by the team this weekend, as Calgary also brought back kicker Rene Paredes.
