Saskatchewan Roughriders Release Long-Time DB Derrick Moncrief

The Saskatchewan Roughriders made the announcement Friday that they released veteran CFL defensive back Derrick Moncrief after five seasons on the team. A statement was released on behalf of the team showing its gratitude for the work Moncrief did on the field and off the field.
“Derrick represented the Saskatchewan Roughriders with pride for five seasons and we were fortunate to have someone of his character as part of our organizations,” Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Jeremy O’Day said. “Not only was he a two-time all-star, but he was a strong community role model through his work with the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation. We wish him all the best in the future.”
Moncrief, 30, joined the organization back in 2017 was with the club through the 2019 season. He returned in 2022 to play for the Roughriders the past two seasons. He was a CFL All-Star for Saskatchewan in 2019 after putting up career-high numbers, including 73 total tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and one forced fumble in 17 games. The defensive back twice was named to the West All-Star team in 2019 and 2022.
Thank you for all you have done for our Club and community, Derrick.

Moncrief played one season with the Edmonton Elks in 2021 after being waived by Saskatchewan in the middle of the season. He had 23 defensive tackles and four sacks in nine games with the Elks.
Moncrief made a couple of NFL stops, including a futures contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in January 2020. He was waived in May before signing with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams had him at training camp before waiving him in the middle of August.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders went into the offseason with five defensive backs who were pending free agents. One of them, CJ Reavis, was re-signed by the team last week.
