Sione Teuhema Stays with BC Lions on Contract Extension
While the wait continues for what will happen with CFL sack leader Mathieu Betts, the BC Lions can at least retain one of its other top pass rushers.
The Lions announced they had re-signed defensive lineman Sione Teuhema on a two-year contract extension through the 2025 season.
Teuhema started 17 games for BC last season, racking up 37 total tackles, seven sacks and two fumble recoveries. His first season in the CFL and with the Lions was in 2022, and he totaled 23 total tackles and eight sacks in 14 games.
Before the CFL, the 28-year-old American defensive lineman played in the Indoor Football League for the Frisco Fighters in 2021. During that season, he recorded nine tackles and one sack.
He was in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers starting in the summer of 2019. Teuhema would spend the 2019 season on the practice squad before signing a futures contract at the end of the season. The Panthers would cut him in 2020.
Despite getting minicamp invites from the Chicago Bears and New York Jets after not being selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, Teuhema’s first professional football stop would be in the AAF with the Arizona Hotshots. In the lone 2019 season for the league, he recorded 13 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. The league would end up folded after eight games due to financial issues.
His first two seasons of college were spent at LSU, finishing with 20 total tackles and two sacks. He transferred to Southeastern Louisiana where he posted his best numbers with 109 total tackles, 13 sacks and one interception.
Teuhema was one of 22 BC Lions that were free agents entering the 2024 offseason. He would be the third player to sign an extension with the team, joining linebacker Maxime Rouyer and wide receiver/returner Terry Williams.
