Teams across the CFL will have an opportunity to rebuild their secondaries with many defensive backs about to enter free agency.

The league recently released CFL.ca’s list of the top 30 pending free agents in the CFL. Four defensive backs were featured on the list, and two have already re-signed with their teams.

Here is the list of the top five defensive backs still available to be signed when free agency kicks off in February.

Top Five CFL Free Agent Defensive Backs

Breaking Down Best Available DBs (Previous Team)

5. Robertson Daniel (Toronto Argonauts)

Robertson Daniel got his first real shot at playing time in his three seasons in the CFL in 2023 and put up career-high stats, including 55 tackles, two sacks, four interceptions and one touchdown in 11 games. Even at 32 years old, Daniel has proven he can still play at a high level. With so many defensive backs for Toronto hitting free agency, however, it will be interesting to see if he makes it back onto the team or if he lands elsewhere.

4. Loucheiz Purifoy (Edmonton Elks)

Veteran defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy has played for four CFL teams since 2016, finding success everywhere he has gone. Last season was his first with Edmonton, and he recorded 49 tackles, three interceptions and two touchdowns in 15 games. The journeyman could find a fifth home soon if the Elks bring him back.

3. Damon Webb (Ottawa Redblacks)

Last season was the first in which Webb saw significant playing time following his move to Ottawa after two years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Webb finished with 64 total tackles, one sack and three interceptions, all of which were all career-highs for him. There are currently eight free agent defensive backs on the team, so it would not be a surprise to see Webb return.

2. Jamal Peters (Toronto Argonauts)

Jamal Peters has been a focal point in Toronto’s secondary for the past three seasons. He finished the 2023 season with 32 defensive tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles in 13 games, and with so many players in the Argos’ secondary entering free agency, he should be at the top of their list to bring back for 2024.

1. Demerio Houston (Winnipeg Blue Bombers)

The CFL’s interception leader is a free agent following his third season as part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' secondary. Houston racked up seven interceptions while adding 50 tackles, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown. He has been getting interest from the NFL after a workout with the Los Angeles Chargers, but if Houston doesn't land down south, expect Winnipeg or other CFL teams to go after him.
