Toronto Argonauts Sign CFL All-Star RB
The Toronto Argonauts have their next backfield leader, and it's someone who is already familiar with the team's offense.
Carey reunites with his former Calgary coaches, Argos head coach Ryan Dinwiddie and receivers coach/pass game coordinator Pete Costanza. He will be paired with Dan Adeboboye, whose contract was extended today.
The one-year incentive-laden pact is worth $130k on average per sources.
The veteran tailback is coming into an ideal situation in a familiar offensive scheme where he will be running behind arguably the CFL's best all-around offensive line.
Carey, 31, is coming off an injury-plagued 2023 season, where he rushed for 476 yards with 21 receptions for 156 yards in nine games played for the Stampeders. The year prior, Carey was a CFL All-star after leading the league in both rushing yards (1,088) and touchdowns (10) while adding 28 catches for 248 yards in 14 games.
The Arizona native was a Western All-Star in 2021 after finishing second in the league in both rushing yards (869) and rushing touchdowns (7). The Wildcat landed in the CFL in 2018 in Calgary, where he won the Grey Cup in his first season. The Chicago Bears drafted Carey in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, and he would go on to play three seasons for them, tallying 443 rushing yards and two touchdowns while hauling in 13 receptions for 131 yards and one score through the air.
For his CFL career, Carey has accumulated 2,855 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns with 90 receptions for 732 receiving yards and one score in 44 career games. Carey was a two-time All-American (2012-2013) and Pac-12 Player of the Year (2013) after rushing for 4,239 yards and 48 touchdowns in 36 games for Arizona.
