Alabama (5-0, 2-0 SEC) was elevated to the top-ranked spot following their 59-31 win over Ole Miss coupled with Clemson’s narrow 21-20 victory over North Carolina on Sept. 28. The winners of the last four College Football Playoff series were both idle last weekend, which means both teams’ performances will be scrutinized to the minutiae ahead of the first CFP rankings, which will be released on Nov. 5.

Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy as he enters this contest leading the country with 23 touchdown passes and ranks fourth in yards (1,718) and fourth in completion percentage (76.4). He has yet to throw an interception and has only 12 more incompletions (35) than touchdown passes.

Devonta Smith has made major strides in emerging as more than a complementary receiver to Jerry Jeudy, leading Alabama with 537 yards and eight touchdowns on 31 receptions. Jeudy continues to be formidable, leading the team with 38 catches while adding 488 yards and six scores.

The Tide ranks third in total yards per game (554.6) and points per game (51.8), but the defense has looked ordinary in their two conference wins. Though most of Ole Miss’ production came with the win well in hand, Alabama has yielded 935 yards and 54 points in its two SEC wins. Last season, Nick Saban’s team limited SEC foes to 270.5 yards and 14.1 points per game.

Texas A&M (3-2, 2-1) suffered a 24-10 loss at Clemson on Sept. 7, getting held without a touchdown until six seconds remained.

Jimbo Fisher’s team also had last weekend off after holding off Arkansas 31-27 on Sept. 28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Kellen Mond threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, including a go-ahead 5-yard score to Quartney Davis with 12:21 to play.

Davis finished with seven catches for 62 yards and a pair of scores as the Aggies preserved the win by forcing the Razorbacks to turn the ball over on downs in the final minute after getting as far as the Texas A&M 19-yard line.

Mond has thrown for 1,333 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing 64.6% of his passes. He will be looking for redemption from last year’s 45-23 loss in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama has won the last six meetings between the teams, but two of its three wins in College Station have been by eight or fewer points.
