Georgetown Targeting Micah Shrewsberry in Coaching Search, per Report
Georgetown recently fired coach Patrick Ewing after a six-year tenure, and it appears they already have a few names in mind as potential replacements.
According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, Georgetown is targeting Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry as one of the “leading candidates” in their coaching search. Additionally, Goodman reports the Hoyas would like to talk to Providence coach Ed Cooley, although Cooley would have to agree to leave for a team in the same conference as the Friars.
Additionally, even though Iona coach Rick Pitino would reportedly be open to the position, Georgetown isn’t interested in hiring him.
Shrewsberry is a longtime veteran who spent 20 years as an assistant for Purdue, Butler, Wabash, DePauw and the Celtics. In 2021, Penn State hired him as their head coach, and the Nittany Lions have gone 34–29 over the past two years and are expected to make the NCAA tournament for the first time under Shrewsberry on Sunday.
Georgetown struggled under Ewing, going 75–109 in six years, including a 13–50 record since the fall of 2021. The Hoyas’ lone NCAA tournament appearance in that span came in 2021, when Georgetown won the Big East tournament to earn an automatic bid despite a 13–13 regular season record.
