Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy intends to transfer to Duke after making several visits to other schools in the past week, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Murphy, a redshirt freshman who entered the transfer portal Dec. 16, will take his talents to Durham, N.C., and will play for new Blue Devils coach Manny Diaz in 2024. The former five-star recruit emerged as one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the current transfer portal window.

The 6’5”, 238-pound signal-caller will be allowed to play immediately with three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Murphy elected to enter the transfer portal due to Texas’s abundance of talent at the quarterback position. Incumbent starter Quinn Ewers, a redshirt sophomore, is expected to return next season as well as freshman Arch Manning.

Murphy chose Duke over Baylor and Oregon State. In the 2023 campaign, Murphy replaced Ewers when he was injured. Murphy threw for 418 yards with three touchdown passes and three interceptions to lead the Longhorns to wins over BYU and Kansas State.

Murphy confirmed the commitment with a social media post Saturday morning.
