Saban said the offensive unit has been very consistent thus far in spring practice under new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Good news, Alabama fans.

The Crimson Tide held its first scrimmage of the spring on Friday afternoon — and Saban said it went well.

“Today we really wanted to evaluate how guys competed with their effort level,” Saban said. “I think the first scrimmage — that’s something that we really wanted to see. I like the progress the team is making. We’re not satisfied with where we are but we’re not displeased with the progress that we are making.”

Despite losing perhaps the greatest quarterback in Crimson Tide history, the Alabama offense is off to a great start in spring practice — according to Saban.

“Offensively, I thought we were pretty consistent in terms of what we did — we moved the ball effectively and with balance,” Saban said. “Both quarterbacks played really, really well. Both of them got opportunities and both of them I thought did a nice job.”

Running backs Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams will handle the load this season for the Crimson Tide. But Saban believes he has four guys that can play at a high level.

“It’s been great,” Saban said. “All of the guys have done well. All four guys have had really, really good springs. They’re all very productive players. All of the guys can contribute to the team in some way. As long as we can stay healthy at that position, I don’t think that’s an issue on our team.”

Alabama was unable to create many big plays on offense last year. On Friday, Saban said there were multiple wide receivers that made explosive plays.

“[Jermaine] Burton made some big plays today. Ja’Corey Brooks made some great plays today,” Saban said. “[Malik] Benson has had a really, really good spring. […] The receiving core has developed very nicely. Consistency in performance is what we need to continue to work on.”

Of course, no offense can succeed without great coaching from its offensive coordinator. Saban spoke very highly of new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

“The offense was great today,” Saban said. “Tommy does a great job with the players. The players like him. He’s taken our system … and added some things to it. I think the offensive line is doing a good job. He does a really good job with formations to create advantages for us on offense. I’m really pleased with what we’ve been able to do on that side of the ball and how we’ve developed.”
